Nicaragua has the lowest crime rate in Central America. Common fighting ended in the 1990's. This means that all travel in Nicaragua is completely safe, unlike traveling in most other Central American countries. Not a single attack against a tourist has occured in the last 8 years, compared to about 20 attacks a day in Mexico! The one to be careful of is the Managuan beggers. They will do anything to feed their families. Most families live on $365 a year. Jewelry is not reccromended to wear in Managua. Anyone should feal safe traveling to Nicaragua.

Droughts in Nicaragua
Nicaragua is expierencing major droughts in the northern part of the country, including the capital, Managua. These droughts are completley wiping out the crops in half of the country. Famers are finding that all of their crops are dying. This is expelling the harvest for over ten-thousand farmers. Nicaragua is already the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. This is almost as devistating for them as the earthquakes for the people of Haiti. Agricultural officials are saying that this will probably lead to a famine. This is leading to a great debate between Agricultural Associations (expect famine) and the Sandinista Administration (who insist that there is plenty of food). This seems like a small thing, but it could be devastating for everyone in Nicaragua.

Dia de los Muertos
Dia de los Muertos means Day of the Dead. It is 2-3 days in the beginning of November when families remember and honor their loved ones who have passed away. They often decorate alters with marigolds, pictures, candles, sugar skulls, and possessions of their loved ones. Skulls are the most common symbol for Dia de los Muertos. Sugar Skulls are decorated with colorful frostings. Their loved ones' graves are also decorated with possessions. It is one of the biggest holidays celebrated in Mexico.

Nicaragua-Geography
Nicaragua is home to the biggest lake in Central America, Lago de Nicaragua. Granada is located on the coast of this magnificent lake. Their natural issues right now are deforestation and water pollution. They receive several hurricanes each year because of their location. In comparison, Nicaragua is as large as New York. They have a lot of volcanoes in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua-Climate
Nicaragua has a lot of different terrains. Their average temperatures throughout the year range from 77-84 degrees F. They have jungly terrains and beachy terrains. Some parts of Nicaragua get over 30 inches of rain every year. Other parts get eleven inches a year. There are some tropical areas and some desert areas. Some parts of Nicaragua haven't received rain in over a hundred years!
